It has been a wonderful week with some pretty special events!
 
We began our Monday Morning with a special visit from Mike Blathchley, the father of a babaganoush student and a Fire Fighter in Wilton, CT ! 
 
Mike taught all about fire safety. Be sure to ask your children these questions…
Who should you call in an emergency?
Who might come if you call 911? 
Why are fire alarms so loud?
What do we do when the fire alarm goes off at school?
What is the most important thing we need to do as a class? – STAYING TOGETHER!!!
What about home?  – Stay together –  
Why should you have a family meeting place? 
Should you go back into the house to save your pets or toys?
What if you can not get out of your house?
* if there is a phone in the room call 911
* stay low because the smoke rises and slowly lowers. (smoke is more dangerous than the fire)
What do you do if your clothes catch on fire?
 
New information…. we should be sleeping with our doors closed! It will help protect you from the fire/smoke spreading faster.
HOMEWORK: 
Test your fire alarms
Have a fire drill at home and make a safe meeting space
 
This morning was absolutely AMAZING! We are so proud of the children for all of their hard work and we absolutely loved hearing all about their names! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to teach your children and thank you for coming to our celebration. 
 
Morning Meeting:  
Has been led by Ben this week. From days of the week to tallying days we have been in school Ben had it down! The children are beginning to take over!!!! They know the routine so well they don’t even need us anymore !!!!!
 
Open Circle:
This week in Open Circle we began with a review of how to give and receive compliments. We then talked “Including One Another” and Cooperating”. Sometimes we may want to play with others that are already involved in a game . Just because we want this does NOT mean others have to include us at that particular moment. They may be in the middle of a great game or activity with another friend. They do NOT have to stop what they are doing. They have the right to say, “not right now, but when we are done we will call you.” Of course we would love for everyone to always be included and we certainly encourage all children to find a way to have their peers join them. We talked about ways children can asked to be included and ways for children to respond kindly.
Once we are involved in a group activity it is important to cooperate with others. 
The first activity was two children entering the center of the circle. They were then asked to draw a picture of a house. They had to figure out how to work together… and they were only given 3 minutes!!!! The entire class was then split into two groups and asked to get in a line from shortest to tallest. As you can imagine this took lots of cooperation. We had to think about who was going to lead the group and how to speak kindly and appropriately to each other. 
Secular Studies:
 
Math Centers: 
This week Things 1 are really strengthening their number sense. They have been using their 10 Frames, counting consecutively (forwards and backwards), as well as using the math centers. Uno Addition, Domino Addition, and dice number sense. 
Things 2 have been continuing to develop their ability to add and subtract, find the missing parts of an equation, as well as create number stories that can then be transformed into an equation. 
They are also working on using the proper math vocabulary and symbols. (addition, subtraction, equation, number story, plus, minus, equal to, the same as. 
 
Science:
Well we can report (from last weeks science experiment with Nurse Carolyn) that washing our hands DEFINITELY makes a difference! 
We also began an amazing science unit on the Human Body! This is a unit that will last a few weeks and we begin with the heart. Ask your children about the Muscular System.
What does your muscular system do?
 – keep your posture
 – stabilize joints
 – allows you movement
 – maintain body temperature 
How many muscles do we have?
more than 600…There are three types of muscles. 
1. Smooth muscles are found all over your body. They are called involuntary because we can not control them. Our brain tells these muscles what to do without us even realizing it!
2. Cardiac muscles are also involuntary. We do not need to tell our heart to beat, it does it all by itself. 
3. Skeletal muscles are voluntary – here are muscles we can control. They cover the skeleton and give our body power and shape. 
How do we keep our muscular system healthy?
 – EXERCISE
 – healthy foods and lots of water
 
What is a skeleton?
 – bones in your body
 
What are the jobs of the bones?
 – make blood cells, allow you to move, and protect your organs
 
How many types of bones are there? 
 – 3
1. axel bones – help your body stand upright.
2. appendicular bones – help you move…arms and legs
3. joints – connect bones to help you move
Spelling/Sight Words:
Things one were given new sight words this week. /she/, /has/, and /was/. We also reviewed last week’s words.
Things 2 were provided with their newest spelling list focusing on /nt/, /mp/ ending words. They were also introduced to a language lesson. This week we talked about complete sentences, and how every sentence must begin with an upper case letter and end with punctuation. 
 
Judaic/Hebrew :
We watched the Vayera godcast and the Shaboom video on Hospitality.  We played Coke and Pepsi with teams “Hachnasat” and “Orchim” — with additional team activities of “ding-dong (open the door!)”, “turn off your electronics”, washing your guests’ feet, and the song “bruchim habaim”.  Our role play was truly epic, including: God, Avraham, Sarah, the 3 “strangels” (stranger/angels),   Lot, baby Yitzhak, the ram, etc.  We talked about the concepts of Hachnasat Orchim (hospitality) and “hineni” — here I am! We wished Sophie M. Mazel Tov on her new baby sister with Siman Tov veMazel Tov and reading books such as 101 Things to Do with a Baby.
