The sixth graders have been learning about the Jewish life cycle. While studying the history of bar and bat mitzvah and traditions associated with becoming bar/bat mitzvah, we also studied the four prayers that are found in tefillin. We learned that the same four prayers are found in bayit shel yad and bayit shel rosh.
Then we had a special guest speaker. Tzvi Rappaport came with his wonderful display board about tefillin. He taught the students how tefillin are made, how the prayers are written to be placed in the tefillin, as well as how tefillin are worn.
As a follow-up activity, the students were given the opportunity to wear tefillin and to help each other to wrap the tefillin.
