Approximately 32 hours ago we met in the Ezra gym. We have not slept since then. After a festive goodbye, we boarded the bus and headed cheerfully off to Newark, New Jersey. The waiting time was long so we filled it with snacks, chess, cards, and the occasional isolated iPod usage. We finally boarded the plane, and at 1:30 we set off across the Atlantic towards one of the most meaningful experiences of our lives. But don’t be fooled, the ten-hour plane ride was definitely not the most enjoyable part. After ten hours of torment, we checked through customs and met our tour guide, Yonit, and madrichim, Sara and Tani! We walked outside out into Tel Aviv and breathed our first ounce of Israeli air. We did a few icebreakers, spoke about Yom Hashoah, and boarded the bus!
We drove on the highway for a bit, and then pulled over on the side of the road, where we waited for a few minutes until the Siren sounded at 10:00 (Israel time). Seeing this with our own eyes was an emotional experience for some of us. We then boarded the bus and headed to lunch! After a quick meal of Holy Bagels and muffins, we boarded the bus again and headed to Dig for a Day!
There, we excavated part of the 84th cave on Moreshet hill, a fake hill that we learned was called a ‘tel.’ We found items from the everyday lives of the people who lived in Israel nearly 2000 years ago. We then went on a really fun cave walk where we went through all of the 84th excavated cave system. We all agree that is was a blast!
After that we drove to Ben Gurion’s grave. Even though most of us would’ve preferred to stay sleeping on the bus and go straight to the kibbutz, the scenery was breathtaking and not worth missing. We learned about ben Gurion’s mission and admired the view of the Negev, which we will be hiking tomorrow! We boarded the bus again and went to the Kibbutz Mashabe Sade.
We ate a delicious meal for dinner, took much-needed showers (the cave expedition was by no means clean), and learned the names of the Kellman-Brown students. We had a quick meeting with Morah Amalya and Nurse Carolyn, and headed to our rooms to prepare for the exciting, superb, extravagant day to come.
Sam, Aaron, Morah Amalya, Nurse Carolyn and the rest of the blogging gang!
