Beyond The Bell
Many factors drive the success of Ezra Academy, but the most important among them is community. Fostering a strong relationship between parents, teachers, and their students, is integral to a powerful educational experience for children. One of the most effective ways we cultivate this parent-teacher-student bond is through Beyond the Bell, our after-school program.
Beyond the Bell (BTB) provides Ezra Academy students with a wide array of valuable enrichment opportunities. Classes meet once per week and are taught by enthusiastic professional and parent volunteers. “I really enjoy being a part of Ezra’s Beyond the Bell program,” says Dr. Charles Bruce, a parent volunteer who has taught the Chess Club in the past. “It allows students to broaden their general academic knowledge and become more unique, well-rounded individuals.”
Beyond the Bell begins with free-play and a snack just after the regular school day ends. The students are then brought to the classrooms by their program instructors from 3:15 to 4:45, where they are immersed in interesting, unfamiliar subjects, which have previously included yoga, chess, web design, art, improv, cooking, Spanish, science, graphic design, and the First Lego League robotics program, and many others.
Ezra Academy’s First Lego League is an international robotics program for students in grades 5-8. Each year, students learn the fundamentals of robotics based on a particular theme. In 2013, students worked within the “Nature’s Fury” theme, researching and eventually creating robots that would be helpful during natural disasters. “I have really liked learning how to program a robot and make it come alive!” said Ethan, grade five.
“BTB’s goal is to enhance the community of Ezra Academy by providing an enriching, fun and educational after-school program to all students. Ezra is unique in its ability to create community among students and families and BTB is just one more opportunity for us to provide a new experience to students in a way that is convenient for parents,” says Lauren Hass, director of the BTB program. “Parent volunteers who have taught classes at BTB are at the heart of the BTB program and have found it to be a very rewarding and educational experience. And their children love seeing them teach!”
